Sonakshi gets inked on birthday

Sonakshi feels her new ink would be like a guiding star in her life from now on.

"Surprise! My birthday gift to myself is this tattoo... My guiding star, now always with me," Sonakshi posted on Twitter alongside a photo of herself flaunting the design.

The actress, who is the daughter of BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha, made her debut in the Hindi film industry with ‘Dabangg’ opposite Salman Khan, which went onto become the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year.

Sonakshi received positive reviews for her performance as well as the Filmfare Award for best female debut.

Post her debut, she went on to play the leading lady in some of Bollywood's biggest hits, including Rowdy Rathore (2012), Son of Sardaar (2012), and Dabangg 2 (2012).

Though Sonakshi received negative reviews for her choice of previous roles but she received critical praise for her performance in Lootera (2013).

Sonakshi will be next be seen in 'Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty' opposite Akshay Kumar. The film, which has been directed by AR Murugadoss, will hit theatres on Friday.

Smriti Irani has no time for films

With Irani assuming the role of the HRD Minister, it seems that she currently has no time for her shoots. The film’s unit has been shooting in Shimla and is returning to Mumbai on Monday. It remains to be seen as to when the actress will find time for her film commitments.

Vinod Bhanushali, president, marketing and promotions, T-Series, says, “Smritiji had to go to Delhi to be part of the newly-formed government and as responsible Indian citizens, we understand that taking on the HRD Ministry’s responsibility is currently her priority. Director Umesh Shukla has already shot with her in Shimla and she will join the crew at a later stage to finish her remaining scenes. The film’s Mumbai schedule begins on June 12 and Smriti is supposed to be part of this schedule.”

Earlier, the film’s Shimla schedule was apparently readjusted for Irani who had to leave for her constituency Amethi on results day.

However, at that time, the director maintained, “Her portion has already been shot, so there was no need of a reschedule.”

Being bilingual can slow brain ageing

Bilingualism has a positive effect on cognition later in life, even for those who acquired the second language in adulthood, researchers found.

While prior research has investigated the impact of learning more than one language, ruling out ‘reverse causality’ has proven difficult.
    
The crucial question is whether people improve their cognitive functions through learning new languages or whether those with better baseline cognitive functions are more likely to become bilingual, researchers said.
    
"Our study is the first to examine whether learning a second language impacts cognitive performance later in life while controlling for childhood intelligence," said lead author Dr Thomas Bak from the Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh.

For the study, researchers relied on data from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936, comprising 835 native speakers of English who were born and living in the area of Edinburgh,
Scotland.

The participants were given an intelligence test in 1947 at age 11 years and retested in their early 70s, between 2008 and 2010.

Of the participants reported to be able to communicate in at least one language other than English, 195 learned the second language before age 18, and 65 learned it thereafter.

Findings indicated that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities compared to what would be expected from their baseline.

The strongest effects were seen in general intelligence and reading. The effects were present in those who acquired their second language early as well as late.

"These findings are of considerable practical relevance. Millions of people around the world acquire their second language later in life. Our study shows that bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the ageing brain," said Bak.

The findings are published in Annals of Neurology, a journal of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society.

99-year-old woman gets degree after 75 yrs

Beal College in Bangor awarded Jessie White her degree during a special ceremony on Friday hosted by Alan Stehle, the college’s president. White was supposed to graduate in 1939 but couldn’t afford the transcript fee.

A Maine native, she received her degree in stenography and bookkeeping.

White suffered a disability from a polio infection but she persisted until she landed a job and worked for years as a bookkeeper.

White said finally getting her degree made her feel ‘great’.


“Never give up learning. They say when you give up learning you grow old,” she said.

“So I don’t intend to give up learning,” She added.

Smartphone battery that gets charged in 30 seconds!

Based on nanodots, the new battery is capable of moving electric current at the speed of lightning. This is way faster compared to batteries that we currently have.

"At the moment, the battery design is only in the prototype stage. In about two years, these magic batteries will be hitting the stores," Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, was quoted as saying.

To make nanodots, the researchers used tiny organic crystals that were only two nanometres long. Through a self-assembly process, these crystals were able to form nanodots.

"They possess a natural glow, something that could be used to illuminate the display of the handsets. This will be equivalent to the kinds of displays that are currently in use," Myersdorf added.

The progress of the battery was demonstrated recently at the 'Think Next' symposium in Tel Aviv, where the battery charged a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone in just 26 seconds, the reports added.

National Award-winning Bengali filmmaker Anjan Das passes away

National Award-winning Bengali filmmaker Anjan Das, best known for films like 'Saanjhbatir Rupkathara', 'Achin Pakhi' and 'Faltu', today passed away following illness, family sources said.

Das, who was in his sixties, died at a hospital where he was being treated for liver cancer.

His 2006 film 'Faltu' which featured Soumitra Chatterjee and Indrani Halder had won the National Award for the best feature film on welfare. A poignant tale on refugees, it was based on Syed Mustafa Siraj's story 'Ranir Ghater Brittanto'.

Most of his films were adapted from literature.

The director had won international critical acclaim with his 2001 film 'Saanjhbatir Rupkathara' (Strokes and Silhouettes), a celluloid adaptation of poet Joy Goswami's first novel. It was showcased at several international film festivals like Montreal, London, Rome, Rotterdam, Edmonton, Madrid,

Singapore among others.

His 2004 film 'Iti Srikanta' (Yours truly, Srikanta) had bagged the National Award for Best Audiography. 'Jara Brishtitey Bhije Chilo (Drenched in the

...rain), based on a poem by Goswami, had won the special director's award at Almaty, Kazakhstan besides fetching the jury special award for the director in Spain...

Vidya Balan’s fan moment with Pankaj Kapur
